German Association Launches Ground-breaking Biocyclic Vegan Project to Drive Protein Transition

The German association Förderkreis Biozyklisch-Veganer Anbau e. V. has been awarded a three-year project, set to commence on March 1st, 2025, aimed at advancing the protein transition and expanding biocyclic vegan farming in Germany. This initiative, funded by the German government, marks a significant step in promoting stock-free organic agriculture as a key solution for a more sustainable and ethical food system.

While the project places a strong emphasis on the transition towards biocyclic vegan farming, its overall design is broader, addressing protein transition in general. A key focus will be on the cultivation of non-legume protein plants, which are less known than pulses but offer great potential for sustainable food production. Examples of such crops include quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, sunflower seeds, and hemp as well as mushrooms and algae. By exploring and promoting these alternative protein sources, the project aims to contribute to a more diverse and resilient plant-based agricultural system.

The project, officially recognised by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, will provide advisory support to farmers transitioning to more sustainable practices. Through targeted consultancy, workshops, and field trials, the Förderkreis aims to establish biocyclic vegan farming as a viable and attractive alternative to conventional agriculture while also advancing knowledge on innovative protein crop cultivation.

By fostering collaboration between farmers, researchers, and policymakers, this project is expected to contribute to the broader movement towards a resilient and climate-friendly food system in Germany. With the support of Biocyclic Vegan International and other key stakeholders, the Förderkreis Biozyklisch-Veganer Anbau e. V. is set to play a pioneering role in shaping the future of sustainable agriculture.
